Sustainability

We are committed to innovation that sustains humanity, the economy, and the environment.

In January 2021, Universiti Putra Malaysia was ranked as the world’s top 27th university by UI-Greenmetric World University Ranking based on its rigorous efforts to promote campus sustainability and effective environmental management. For twelve consecutive years, UPM was ranked 1st, ahead of other universities in Malaysia by UI-Greenmetric World University Ranking.

 

UPM was measured in its commitment to developing environmental-friendly infrastructure. The ranking on environmental sustainability takes into consideration more than 40 indicators, covering six main scopes, consisting of infrastructure (15 percent), energy and climate change (21 percent), waste (18 per cent), water (10 per cent) and education (18 per cent).

 

SPE'S SUSTAINABILITY GOALS


 

 RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

 

  1.   Energy Use
  • To consume energy at the optimum level.

 

  1.   Waste Management
  •  To ensure the responsible management of all waste streams arising from our activities, using innovative solutions to reduce our consumption of single-use items.
  •  Reuse materials and recycle waste produced as much as possible.

 

  1.   Water Management
  • To ensure the responsible management of water resources, reducing our consumption and preventing pollution of the natural environment.

 

  1.   Catering
  • To work with our food suppliers to ensure that food and drinks are sourced responsibly, food miles are minimised, and the effects on the wider environment are taken into account.
  • To increase consumer awareness of the environmental impact of food and drink.

 

  1.   Biodiversity And Ecosystem
  •  To raise awareness of the School's natural environment and promote biodiversity across the School estate.

 

 

ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH

 

  1.   Research
  • To expand and provide sustainability-related studies to the academic community and general public to become healthier, smarter and more resilient. We will ensure our operational activities will be informed by our world-leading research.

 

  1.   Waste Management
  •  To provide all students with learning opportunities to develop their understanding of sustainability.

 

 

ENGAGEMENT

 

  1.  Engagement With Our Community
  • To engage SPE community of staff and students in improving the environmental and social impact of the School.
  • To promote knowledge exchange and best practice by building capacity across all departments and encouraging all students and staff to embed sustainability practice in their activities.

 

  1.   Engaging With Society
  •  To work collaboratively with stakeholders and the wider public to develop appropriate actions addressing sustainability challenges.
  • To create public engagement opportunities related to sustainability locally, nationally, and globally.
