Meryem Duygun is a Professor of Banking and Finance at the Nottingham University Business School in the UK. Meryem holds the Aviva Chair in Risk and Insurance. Her research expertise is in the areas of risk, banking, financial technologies (FinTech) and finance.

In September 2021 Meryem was conferred the Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences, in recognition for the excellence and impact of her work and her wider contributions to the social sciences for public benefit. She is the President of IFABS-International Finance and Banking Society and she co-directs the INFINITY, the Inclusive Financial Technology Innovation Hub. Meryem sits on the Program Board (Steering Group) of the Digital Nottingham-a strategic initiative by the University of Nottingham.

Meryem’s research was funded by UKRI-ESRC, British Academy, Research England and Experian. Meryem is principal investigator for the research project on UK SMEs: quantifying their pandemic risk and credit risk exposures in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. This funded research by UKRI ESRC is in collaboration with the Bank of England and Confederation of British Industry (CBI), with industry support from Experian. The project uses Artificial intelligence techniques to examine the impact of COVID-19 on risk exposures of UK SMEs.

Meryem has been recognised by influential industry titles. She has been named on the “Women in FinTech Powerlist 2020” by UK Innovate Finance. In 2019 she was listed among the seventeen most influential women in Insurtech by FinTech Global. Meryem has also been consistently named in the Top 30 of the most influential women in Islamic business and finance (ranked 20th in 2020). Meryem is a member of the CBI Financial Services Innovation Forum.

As a renowned international expert in Banking and Finance, Meryem is a regular consultant for the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Indonesian Supreme Audit Board (BPK). She designed and delivered several executive education and capacity building training programmes for UNIDO and BPK. She co-organised research events in collaboration with prominent institutions, central banks and international organisations.

She was a co- organiser of a major research impact event in Tokyo, Japan on 17-18 October, 2017 in collaboration with ADBI and UNESCAP-United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia. She has also organised and hosted the first ever Nottingham University Tri-Campus Banking and Finance Conference, which took place in Ningbo, China in August 2017. She is a regular speaker at national and international events. She has published numerous studies in leading international journals. She serves as an editorial board member for a number of internationally recognized journals. Currently she is subject editor of Journal of International Financial Markets Institutions & Money (ABS 3) and Associate Editor of Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence -Artificial Intelligence in Finance. She served as a guest editor for Journal of Corporate Finance (ABS 4) and Journal of Banking & Finance (ABS 3).
