SERDANG - QSR Brands donated RM50,000 to the Faculty of Economics and Management (FEP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to carry out the Asnaf Entrepreneurship Development Programme that assists students from needy families to grow their business.

FEP dean, Prof. Dr. Azali Mohamad, said the UPM-QSR Asnaf Entrepreneurship Development programme aimed at producing successful asnaf entrepreneurs who would become zakat payers instead of receivers to help boost the economy of the nation.

"The comprehensive module designed for the first four asnaf entrepreneurs of the UPM-QSR cooperation has succeeded in not only expanding the business of these entrepreneurs, but also allowing one of them to generate a five-figure income," he said.

A total of 40 students from various faculties at UPM were selected through a four-phase pilot programme. The first two phases involve student selection and knowledge sharing sessions which utilised nine comprehensive modules on entrepreneurship development.

The third and fourth phases involve presentations of business plans by asnaf students and selection of candidates to receive the circulating capital. Successful candidates will also be given exposure through industrial visits related to their business scope.

FEP lecturers and trainers from QSR Brands who represent the industry, guided the students in writing and presenting their business proposals.

They were also taken to Cameron Highland to visit a strawberry farm owned by a UPM alumnus.

These asnaf entrepreneurs also took on the challenge of joining Halfest 2019 held at MIECC, The Mines, from 4 to 8 September to expand their business and network through booths sponsored by QSR Brands.

Besides QSR, the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Halal Product Research Institute and Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat and Endowment (WAZAN) were also involved in helping the students.
